An Israeli soldier was fatally stabbed and another person wounded in an attack at a shopping center in northern Israel, according to police. The incident occurred on the second floor of the Hutzot Karmiel Mall in Karmiel on Wednesday. Gal Zeid, spokesperson for Israel’s Galilee Medical Center, confirmed one fatality and that a second victim was in intensive care.

Police reported that the assailant, identified as a Palestinian citizen of Israel from Nahf, was shot dead at the scene. Authorities are investigating the incident as a potential terrorist attack. While no group immediately claimed responsibility, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad praised the attack as a “heroic operation” on Telegram.

Israeli media, citing Karmiel Police Chief Yitzhak Abuhatzira, reported the arrest of several members of the suspect’s family, including his mother, brother, and sister. Social media footage, verified by Al Jazeera’s Sanad fact-checking agency, showed mall patrons attempting first aid on a victim dressed in a green uniform.

Following the attack, police closed the mall’s entrances and conducted extensive search operations. Tensions between Israelis and Palestinians have escalated since Israel’s military operations in Gaza last October. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties in Gaza and the West Bank, where Israeli forces conduct frequent operations and settlements expand.

Nour Odeh, reporting from Ramallah, emphasized the interconnectedness of violence within Israel, the West Bank occupation dynamics, and Gaza conflict. She highlighted ongoing unrest fueled by military actions, settler violence, and retaliatory attacks.

Peace Now, an anti-settlement watchdog, recently reported Israel’s approval of the largest land appropriation in the occupied West Bank in over three decades. This escalation, along with ongoing land seizures, exacerbates Palestinian grievances and resentment toward Israeli policies.

Gaza’s Ministry of Health reported extensive casualties from Israeli military actions since October, underlining the persistent toll of the conflict on civilian populations.
